Phraseology cheat-sheet
| Roger | I have received all of your last transmission. It does not mean yes and it is not a read-back. |
|---|---|
| Wilco | I understand and will comply. Good for "report ..." instructions, not a substitute for reading back a clearance. |
| Affirm / Negative | Yes / no. Never "yes", "yeah" or "no". |
| Say again | Repeat all, or the part you name. Never "repeat". |
| Standby | Wait and I will call you. |
| Read-back | Always read back runway, taxi and crossing instructions, levels, headings, speeds, QNH, SSR codes and clearances, then end with your callsign. |
| Take-off | Say the word only in "ready for departure" (not "take-off") until you are cleared for take-off. |

- Fly the four sample flights: departure, circuit and landing, en-route, and approach.
- At each step choose the correct call or read-back, then read why the other choices fail.
- Notice when "wilco" is right and when only a full read-back will do.
Exam point
Roger means "I have received". Wilco means "I will comply". Neither replaces a read-back of a clearance. Always end a read-back with your callsign.
Study aid only. Figures here are simplified and fictional, so always use current DGCA and ICAO documents and the approved manual for real operations.
