Frontal Passage

Watch a cold front, a warm front and an occlusion pass over a station and see what the instruments record

MeteorologyWeather systemsLifetime

What to try

  • Press Play the passage on the cold front and watch pressure, temperature and wind direction change at the station.
  • Switch to the warm front and count the cloud sequence as the front gets closer: Ci, Cs, As, Ns.
  • Use Just before and Just after to compare the weather on each side of the front.

Exam point

Cold front: steep slope, narrow band of Cb, sharp veer and a sudden pressure rise. Warm front: shallow slope, long cloud sequence, steady rain, then a veer and the temperature jumps. The wind veers as a front passes in the northern hemisphere.
