Stability & Adiabatics

Lift a parcel of air through a real atmosphere with ELR, DALR and SALR to see whether it rises or sinks

MeteorologyAir in motionLifetime

What to try

  • Pick Conditionally unstable and press Lift and release to see the parcel climb, form cloud and keep rising.
  • Switch to Stable and see it sink back. Then try the inversion, which stops the parcel at once.
  • Raise the surface temperature and the dew point spread. Watch cloud base move up by about 400 ft for each degree of spread.
  • Compare the three lapse rates on the readout: ELR, DALR 3°C per 1000 ft and the SALR, which changes with the air.

Exam point

ELR below SALR: absolutely stable. ELR above DALR (3°C per 1000 ft): absolutely unstable. ELR between SALR and DALR: conditionally unstable. A parcel keeps rising only while it is warmer than the air around it.
