Read the A320 primary flight display and the five FMA columns, then see what the automation is doing in every phase of flight.

What to try

  • Click through the thirteen phases of flight, from the take-off roll to a go-around, and read the FMA from left to right.
  • Press Label the display to number the parts of the PFD and read what each one is for.
  • Press Play the flight to step through a whole flight automatically.
  • Use the quiz at the bottom: it shows only the FMA, and you say what the aircraft is doing.

Exam point

Read the FMA as five columns: thrust, vertical mode, lateral mode, approach capability and engagement status. Green is engaged, cyan is armed or selected, magenta is managed. After any change on the FCU, look at the FMA to confirm what the aircraft will do next.
