Human Performance Lab
Find out how long you have at altitude, test your knowledge of the four types of hypoxia, and find your blind spot
Close your left eye. With your right eye, look steadily at the cross from about 30 cm (arm's length). Slowly slide the dot across and watch it disappear when it lands on your blind spot.

- Move the flight level slider and read the time of useful consciousness, the pressure and the physiological zone.
- Switch to 100% oxygen and see how much altitude it buys, then add a rapid decompression.
- Press Start the clock to watch the symptoms appear in order.
- Answer the questions on the four types of hypoxia, then find your blind spot.
Exam point
Typical TUC: FL180 20 to 30 min, FL220 10 min, FL250 3 to 5 min, FL280 2.5 to 3 min, FL300 1 to 2 min, FL350 30 to 60 s, FL400 15 to 20 s, FL430 and above 9 to 12 s. A rapid decompression shortens it. The four types are hypoxic, hypaemic, stagnant and histotoxic.
